I keep a special email address that I use exclusively for submissions and correspondence for my writing efforts. It’s through one of the big search engine sites so I can access it from any computer, and it’s free, so I can afford it.
I check the email inbox there every day, and most of the time I have nothing new. (The spammers haven’t found it yet.) Today I went there thinking I would create some folders and better organize the mail I did have, and I found a new email waiting in the Bulk Items folder. I didn’t realize I even had a Bulk Items folder until this piece of mail went into it.
I opened the new piece of mail, and it turned out to be from an agent I had queried only days before. I had sent my query on Saturday, and she responded on the very first business day after that. (I’m calling Monday a holiday.) I’ve received a couple of rejections this swiftly before, so that’s what I expected. I’m happy to say I was disappointed in this assumption.
The agent said she thought my novel sounded “entertaining,” and would I please send her the first fifty pages? You know how the story goes from here.
Curiously, I came across this agent through the Guide to Literary Agents Editor’s Blog rather than through the agent list I generally use. I like this blog and visit it about as regularly as I visit my email inbox.
As you know, I’ll let you know how things progress.
