To blog or not to blog

Not.

I’m taking a side in the usage wars.

I now insist that “blog” is not a verb. And its use as a noun is hereby restricted.

Think of this site (this blog) as a book, or better yet, as an anthology, or even better, as a magazine. The blog is the thing, so to speak, but not the act. The blog is the vessel, not the act of filling it. You wouldn’t say you’re going to “magazine” about a topic that interests you, would you? Nor would you say you’re going to “article” about a topic. It hurts the ears!

Within a blog (magazine) are posts, which are equivalent to articles. While you might tell your friends that you’re going to “post” about something on your your blog, I think you would better say that you are going to write a post on your blog about it. Thus, verb-noun-noun. But you wouldn’t say you’re going to “blog” about it. Or you shouldn’t. Even to say you spent the morning “blogging” is suspect.

Got it straight? The verb “to blog” is hereby banished from cyberspace. You can tell everyone I said so.
