Whence encouragement?

Isak Dinesen is supposed to have said “I write a little every day, without hope and without despair.”

That’s fine, I suppose, but what of encouragement? She seemed to be speaking from a steady state, from a balance. Her words imply that she was neither driven nor static. What, then, was her motivation?

I suspect her quote (out of context) is typical of such things: ambiguous enough to mean all things to all people. One can project just about any meaning into those words and then take that meaning as profound.

Yet I ask, what was her motivation? And did she have encouragement (from outside or within) as she wrote?
